Urgent Action Needed: Student Unions Demand Swift Power Restoration in Arunachal
Mounting frustration over prolonged power outages in the Mebo Banggo and Monggu Banggo areas of the 39th Mebo Assembly Constituency led to an urgent meeting today involving the Mebo administration, power department officials, Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) leaders, and key student union representatives.
Student leaders from the Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU), All East Siang District Students’ Union (AESDSU), and All Mebo Constituency Students’ Union (AMCSU)—including Tembo Lego, Kato Tayeng, Jipson Ngupok, and Kadum Perme-voiced strong objections regarding the continued neglect and erratic power supply that have disrupted daily life in the region.
During the meeting, the student leaders demanded a detailed explanation from the Pasighat Electrical Division about the reasons for the ongoing power failures. They called for the immediate restoration of electricity services, a waiver of electricity bills for June due to the outages, and the implementation of substantial infrastructure improvements to ensure reliable power in the future. The unions also emphasized the critical need to explore alternative energy solutions.
The student representatives criticized the power department for overlooking a previous complaint submitted on June 20, 2024, that outlined frequent breakdowns and low voltage issues. They reported that conditions have significantly worsened since then, leading to complete power outages over the past several weeks.
“This goes beyond mere inconvenience; it is a total breakdown of essential services,” stated Tembo Lego and Kato Tayeng. They highlighted that sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and local businesses have suffered significantly due to the lack of electricity. The leaders particularly noted that the absence of power during essential farming months like June and July has severely impacted agricultural activities reliant on irrigation systems.
The student unions warned that if the crisis persists without resolution within ten days, they would resort to democratic protests to assert their right to electricity. “We expect immediate and decisive action from the department,” they urged.
Executive Engineer Obang Yirang from the Pasighat Electrical Division responded to the concerns, explaining that the delays resulted from technical faults in transformers sent to Assam for repairs. He assured attendees that the repaired transformers would return within a few days, restoring normal supply soon after.
The meeting was chaired by Nancy Yirang, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mebo, and included participation from East Siang Zila Parishad Chairperson Olen Rome and other local officials. However, ADC Yirang refrained from making public comments, stating that the power department should address the issue directly.
