India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released a preliminary report on the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8, which went down shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on June 12. The disaster claimed 260 lives, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 individuals on the ground.
The report reveals that a catastrophic sequence of events unfolded just 90 seconds post-takeoff when both engines unexpectedly lost thrust, resulting in a rapid descent. Key to the investigation was the finding that the fuel supply to the engines was interrupted moments before the crash. CNN reported that safety analyst David Soucie highlighted how the fuel switches are “designed to be intentionally moved,” emphasizing that incidents where all fuel switches are accidentally turned off are “extremely rare.”
