When Shao Chun Chen faced an unexpected layoff from his position at Google in early 2024, he found himself at a crossroads. For the 39-year-old, this setback prompted a period of reflection and an opportunity to reassess his life’s direction. “When the layoff happened, I was feeling sorry for myself,” Chen shared with CNBC Make It. “Then I flipped it around and asked myself: ‘How can this be a positive thing?’”
Embracing this newfound freedom, Chen, along with his wife, decided to relocate from Singapore to Thailand, a country they had always admired. “I wanted to try something different, and I’ve always enjoyed Thailand,” Chen explained. The diverse landscapes-from urban hubs to tranquil beaches-along with the country’s friendly visa policies for foreigners, drew them in.
In November 2024, the couple settled in Chiang Mai, where they now reside in a 600-square-foot luxury condo, costing approximately 15,000 Thai baht (about $460) per month. This living arrangement is a fraction of what they paid in Singapore; Chen’s previous 500-square-foot apartment had set him back around $2,500 per month. The Chiang Mai condo comes fully furnished, with additional costs for utilities and WiFi totaling about $35 monthly.
Adjusting to life in Thailand has been a refreshing change for Chen. He noted that the slower pace and lower stress levels have allowed him to make significant lifestyle and financial adjustments. “When I was in Singapore, my job paid very well, but life was hectic. I was working 12 to 14 hours a day,” he said. In contrast, Chen has found that he spends less money on stress-relief activities now that he has less stress to manage. “Things that were once necessities-therapy, spa visits-are now affordable luxuries, but I don’t even desire them anymore,” he reflected.
In addition to enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle, Chen has successfully transitioned his career. He now works independently, creating educational content on YouTube and running a coaching business where he charges up to $500 per hour, depending on the client. He also teached as an adjunct lecturer at the National University of Singapore, although he has recently put that role on hold to focus on his new endeavors.
Financially savvy, Chen has built a seven-figure investment portfolio over the past decade, allowing him to achieve a sense of financial independence. “I find that I actually save more money, even though I don’t work as much,” he said. This newfound financial freedom has given him the flexibility to explore hobbies and interests he previously had little time for, such as reading and enjoying leisurely coffee breaks-a stark contrast to his past life defined by efficiency and high-pressure productivity.
While Chen expresses contentment with his new lifestyle, he remains open to the possibility of returning to Singapore if the right opportunity arises. For now, he is fully engaged in the vibrant culture of Thailand, finding joy in simple pleasures that he can now afford to explore. “People here don’t prioritize efficiency. They enjoy their day-to-day lives,” he observed, reflecting on the different values that shape his current environment.
This life-altering experience has taught him the importance of balance and contentment, offering a fresh perspective on what truly matters.
