Justice for Victims: BJP Fact-Finding Team Demands Independent Probe into Heart-Wrenching Kolkata Law Student Rape Case
Union Minister and BJP National President J.P. Nadda announced that a BJP fact-finding team has submitted a report concerning the alleged gang-rape of a law college student in Kolkata, advocating for an independent investigation into the disturbing incident. The four-member team, established by Nadda in response to reports on June 25, included former Union Ministers Satya Pal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, as well as Rajya Sabha MP and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, and senior advocate and MP Manan Kumar Mishra.
At a press conference, Singh expressed deep concerns over the local police’s handling of the case, particularly the registration and investigation processes. The police have arrested four individuals related to the incident. However, Singh, a former police officer with 35 years of experience, highlighted alarming procedural irregularities, stating, “This is the first time I have seen the names of accused persons erased. When the police tamper with the complaint itself, how can we expect that the victim and her family will receive justice?”
Singh claimed that the survivor’s initial complaint had named individuals whose names were later removed from official records, raising questions about the integrity of the investigation. He further alleged that one of the accused has well-established connections with the ruling Trinamool Congress and reportedly has a history of being booked in 11 criminal cases. “Law and order has totally collapsed in West Bengal,” Singh emphasized, calling for accountability.
Biplab Kumar Deb demanded that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee take moral responsibility for the situation and urged her to resign, further intensifying the political ramifications of the incident. Manan Kumar Mishra, also the Chairman of the Bar Council of India, supported the call for an impartial investigation, urging the BJP leadership to engage the Central government in pursuing a thorough inquiry.
The fact-finding team’s report was formally submitted to Nadda on their return to New Delhi, marking a significant step in the party’s response to the troubling allegations.
