Breaking News: Bharat Bandh LIVE Updates – Public Transport Chaos as Trade Unions Rally Against Government Policies!

A coalition of ten prominent trade unions has unveiled a comprehensive 17-point charter of demands, calling for significant changes to India’s labor landscape. Key proposals include the withdrawal of fixed-term employment contracts and the abolition of the controversial Agnipath scheme, which recruits soldiers on a temporary basis. The unions are advocating for an eight-hour workday, the restoration of a non-contributory Old Pension Scheme, and a minimum monthly pension of ₹9,000 for subscribers of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

The unions assert that current economic policies are exacerbating unemployment, inflating prices of essential goods, and leading to diminished wages. They highlight a troubling trend of reduced investment in vital social sectors, including education and healthcare, which disproportionately affects lower-income groups and the middle class. “These circumstances are breeding greater inequality and hardship in society,” the coalition emphasized.

The forum further critiques the recently enacted four labor codes, arguing that they are designed to undermine the trade union movement. The unions allege these codes will extend working hours, erode workers’ rights to collective bargaining, and diminish the right to strike. Moreover, they contend that the codes effectively decriminalize violations of labor laws by employers, placing workers at a disadvantage.

In addition, the unions are pressing for the implementation of recommendations from the Indian Labour Conference. They demand that scheme workers-including Anganwadi, ASHA, and midday meal staff-be granted formal worker status and that they receive coverage under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

The coalition underscores that the plight of workers must be prioritized, as the current trajectory threatens to marginalize millions. Their charter not only seeks immediate reforms but also emphasizes the necessity of sustainable policies that safeguard workers’ rights and livelihoods.

These demands reflect broader concerns about the socioeconomic landscape in India, where rising living costs and stagnant wages are increasingly making it difficult for families to make ends meet. The unions believe that a collective response is crucial to counteract these challenges.

As discussions around labor policies continue to escalate, the unions urge that their charter not be overlooked. They invite dialogues with the government and stakeholders to address these pressing issues, aiming for a more equitable and just working environment for all. With workers’ rights at the forefront of their agenda, this coalition strives to foster a labor ecosystem that prioritizes dignity, security, and economic stability for every individual.

This unfolding situation will be closely monitored, as it holds significant implications for the future of labor relations and economic equity in India.
