BTR Delegation Urges Amit Shah for Key Demands Ahead of Assam Elections

A high-level delegation from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), led by Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro and prominent leaders from the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), convened with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The meeting aimed to address key demands ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.

One of the delegation’s primary requests was for the release of six members of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB), including notable leader Ranjan Daimary, prior to the elections. The Union Home Minister reportedly assured the delegation that he would look into the matter and take appropriate steps regarding their release.

Additionally, the delegation urged Shah to facilitate the introduction and passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. This bill includes essential provisions related to Clause 4.3 of the BTR Accord, which Bodo leaders view as crucial for fulfilling commitments established in the landmark peace agreement signed in 2020.

The discussion also covered financial devolution under Article 280 to the BTR. The leaders underlined the necessity of implementing fiscal arrangements to economically and administratively empower the autonomous region.

Furthermore, the delegation called for the inclusion of more villages from the Biswanath and Sonitpur districts into the BTR, highlighting that several Bodo-majority areas remain outside the territorial boundaries. They also advocated for granting hill district status to the Bodo-Kachari population in Karbi Anglong district. In this context, they requested that the Union government recognize the Karbi community under the Scheduled Tribe (Plains) category.

Crucially, the BTR leadership clarified that their demands are not tied to the upcoming BTR elections but reflect long-standing issues that require resolution prior to the 2026 state elections in Assam. They emphasized that addressing these matters is vital for ensuring long-term peace and upholding the provisions of the BTR Accord.
