Apollo Proton Cancer Centre Unveils Revolutionary Advanced Liver Cancer Clinic: Empowering Hope and Healing
Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) has officially launched its new Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic, aimed at addressing the growing prevalence of liver cancers in India. The clinic was inaugurated by Radhakrishnan Thiagarajan, a retired Additional Director-General of Police, in a ceremony attended by Karan Puri, CEO of Apollo Cancer Centres, and Sujith Kumar Mullapally, a consultant in medical oncology.
In recent years, the burden of liver cancer has surged dramatically in India, contributing to almost 6% of global liver cancer cases. Various factors, including a rise in hepatitis infections, alcoholic liver disease, obesity, and late diagnoses, are driving this increase. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, there is a troubling uptick in cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver metastases, especially among individuals with existing liver conditions.
HCC, the most prevalent form of liver cancer, often stems from chronic liver damage conditions such as cirrhosis, which can develop from chronic hepatitis infections, heavy alcohol consumption, or fatty liver disease. Despite the alarming rise in cases, previous treatment approaches have been hampered by the lack of specialised, liver-specific multidisciplinary programmes, leading to delayed interventions and gaps in care.
Apollo’s Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic aims to close these gaps by offering a comprehensive, integrated approach to treatment. The clinic is staffed by a team of specialists in various fields, including medical oncology, surgical gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, radiation oncology, interventional radiology, medical genetics, pathology, anaesthesia, and palliative care. This collaborative model is expected to facilitate standardized treatment pathways, initiate prospective research, and investigate emerging therapies, constantly prioritizing patient care.
Dr. Sujith Kumar Mullapally emphasized the clinic’s commitment to placing patients at the center of its operations, saying, “The establishment of the Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic will enable us to create treatment pathways that are not only standardized but also tailored to emerging therapies. This will enhance our ability to provide effective, timely care.”
As liver cancer disease patterns evolve, the clinic stands to become a beacon for innovative treatment and patient-focused care. With its integrated approach, Apollo’s new facility is poised to significantly impact the landscape of liver cancer treatment in India.
The Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic is not just a response to the rising incidence of liver cancer but a proactive approach to cancer care that prioritizes early detection and comprehensive treatment. With the increasing incidence of liver diseases and cancers, such initiatives are critical for enhancing patient outcomes and reducing mortality rates associated with this often overlooked but deadly illness.
This clinic represents a significant step towards providing better healthcare solutions for liver cancer patients in India, offering hope and advanced treatment options for those affected by this growing health crisis. The focus on collaboration among various specialists ensures that patients receive well-rounded care tailored to their unique medical histories and needs.
