A three-day Nagaland State Chess Championship commenced today at the Nagaland Olympic Association Complex in Kohima. Celebrating its 21st edition, the event features competitions in Open, Under-14, and Under-10 categories. The championship was officially opened by Anato Zhimomi, Director of Ockter Service Pvt Ltd in Dimapur, alongside Dr. Theyiesinuo Keditsu, a noted poet, writer, and educator.

Running until July 5, the tournament is organized by the Nagaland Chess Association under the auspices of the All India Chess Federation and is supported by Ockter Services Pvt. Ltd. A total of 58 players will vie for a combined prize pool of ₹101,000, with the top four players in the Open category earning the chance to represent Nagaland at the forthcoming 62nd National Chess Championship in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, from September 21 to October 1.

The championship is being officiated by Fide Arbiter Vekukho Soho as Chief Arbiter, with support from five Senior National Arbiters including Mengise Haikam, who serves as Deputy Chief Arbiter, along with Kiyaselie Mere, James Ruokuoselhou, Rokozono Nagi, and Mezhuvizo Nagi. The opening ceremony was chaired by Mohokiya Apon, Vice President of the Nagaland Chess Association (NCA).

P. Khezhie, the NCA working president, highlighted the importance of the Nagaland State Chess Championship, calling it a landmark event that not only showcases chess but also the achievements of the Nagaland Chess Association. He noted that “Chess, often hailed as the game of kings, is a profound blend of strategy, intellect, and patience,” emphasizing its long history dating back over a millennium to ancient India, where it was known as Chaturanga.

Khezhie further elaborated on the significance of chess, stating that it enhances the mind, improves cognitive abilities, and fosters critical thinking. He remarked, “Chess teaches valuable life skills such as patience, discipline, and strategic planning,” promoting fairness and respect among players. He described chess as a mental workout, noting studies that show it boosts memory, problem-solving skills, and creativity.

“This game challenges the mind to anticipate multiple moves ahead,” Khezhie said, underlining its effectiveness in teaching young players how to address complex problems strategically. He also pointed out that chess knows no language barriers, uniting enthusiasts across cultures.

Nagaland has previously produced champions in the Under 2000 All India Level ELO rating category three times, showcasing the talent and dedication of its players. Additionally, 20 players from the region have achieved the esteemed N.C. ELO rating, demonstrating their skills and determination.

Khezhie expressed pride in the presence of an international arbiter at the event, whose expertise has greatly benefited the association. This achievement reflects the depth of talent and commitment within the Nagaland Chess Association.

As the Nagaland State Chess Championship unfolds, Khezhie encouraged attendees to celebrate not just the wins, but the camaraderie, sportsmanship, and enduring love for chess that the event embodies.
