In a disturbing development following the arrest of Monojit Mishra, the primary suspect in the rape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata, another student from South Calcutta Law College has come forward to reveal a climate of fear surrounding Mishra on campus. The student, who spoke anonymously to NDTV, recounted that women frequently considered avoiding classes altogether to steer clear of Mishra, reflecting an atmosphere of intimidation.
Mishra, along with two accomplices, was taken into custody after the survivor alleged that he assaulted her on campus grounds. The additional student claimed that multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) had been filed against Mishra previously, but no action had been taken due to his reputed political connections. “There was an atmosphere of intimidation on the campus. He used to click photos of female students, morph them, and circulate them on WhatsApp groups,” she explained.
Detailing past allegations, the student recounted instances of sexual harassment involving Mishra. She stressed that the environment had made many students too fearful to attend classes. “Nobody dared to confront him because he was politically safeguarded,” she said, underscoring the pervasive culture of fear. The allegations against Mishra date back several years, with claims of serious misconduct, including an incident in 2019 where he allegedly tore a woman’s clothes in an act of harassment, and in 2024, an assault on a security guard, including vandalism.
The police have indicated that Mishra, along with his co-accused Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed, engaged in premeditated torture of the victim. A police official characterized the crime as pre-planned, revealing that the victim had been targeted from her very first day at the college. The ongoing investigation by a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has uncovered a troubling history of sexual harassment by the trio, who reportedly filmed these encounters and used the footage for blackmail.
Authorities are currently conducting searches for any videos taken by the accused, which are believed to exist. The police are actively pursuing leads that could provide further evidence against Mishra and his associates. This case has drawn significant public interest, and many are calling for justice and a reassessment of how such allegations are handled, particularly regarding politically connected individuals.
