
NASA’s Exoplanet Hunter Unveils Stunning Discovery of a Massive ‘Cool’ Alien World Beyond Jupiter!
NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), in collaboration with citizen scientists, has unveiled an exciting new alien world known as TOI-4465 b. This intriguing exoplanet is a gas giant situated nearly 400 light-years from Earth. With a mass six times that of Jupiter and a diameter that is 1.25 times greater, TOI-4465 b orbits a star in an elliptical path, positioned at less than half the distance between our planet and the Sun.
The proximity of TOI-4465 b to its parent star results in surface temperatures ranging from 93 to 204 degrees Celsius. Remarkably, this gas giant completes a full orbit in just 102 Earth days. Unlike other comparable exoplanets that often experience extreme heat, TOI-4465 b stands out with its comparatively cooler temperatures, given its size and density. Researchers find TOI-4465 b particularly fascinating as it serves as a link between the hotter gas giants and the colder ice giants, such as Neptune.
In a recent statement to Space.com, Zahra Essack, a researcher at the University of Mexico, emphasized the significance of this discovery. “This discovery is important because long-period exoplanets, defined as having orbital periods longer than 100 days, are difficult to detect and confirm due to limited observational opportunities and resources. As a result, they are underrepresented in our current catalog of exoplanets.”
TESS identifies exoplanets by detecting slight dips in the light emitted from a star when these celestial bodies transit in front of it. This process is a vital method for locating planets that orbit stars beyond our solar system. TOI-4465 b was identified during one such event, but researchers required an additional transit to conduct more in-depth studies. Essack notes, “These observational windows are extremely limited, and each transit lasts about 12 hours. It is incredibly rare to get 12 full hours of dark, clear skies in one location.”
To surmount these observational challenges, astronomers enlisted the help of 24 amateur citizen scientists from 10 different countries, all members of the Unistellar Citizen Science Network. Using their telescopes, these dedicated volunteers played a crucial role in observing and confirming the existence of TOI-4465 b.
