In 1986, Rao began his legal career, practicing predominantly in the District and Sessions Courts in Hyderabad and the High Court of Telangana, previously known as the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.

Throughout his career, Rao has held various significant positions within the party, including serving as the State Executive Member of ABVP from 1977 to 1985, Vice President of ABVP’s city chapter from 1980 to 1985, and city Vice President of BJYM from 1986 to 1990. From 2006 to 2010, he was the joint convenor of the National Legal Cell and later served as the official spokesperson for BJP (Andhra Pradesh) from 2007 to 2009.

Rao’s leadership was further solidified when he was appointed as the BJP State General Secretary in Andhra Pradesh from 2009 to 2012, followed by a role as chief spokesperson for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from 2012 to 2015. His political acumen culminated in his election as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) for the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahbubnagar Graduates Constituency in 2015, where he served as Floor Leader until 2021.
