Ardhendu Sekhar Triumphs at 48th M’laya Chess Championship!

Shillong, June 30: The 48th Meghalaya State FIDE Rating Chess Championship 2025 concluded successfully today at the historic Khasi National Dorbar Hall in Mawkhar, Shillong. Organized by the East Khasi Hills District Chess Association (EKHDCA) under the auspices of the Meghalaya Chess Association (MCA), the championship took place over three days from June 26 to 28, receiving recognition from the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

A total of 111 players from various affiliated districts of Meghalaya competed in this tournament, which followed the FIDE Swiss rules system across eight rounds. The event was supervised by Chief Arbiter IA Th. Biju Singh, with FA Amar Bhandari as Deputy Chief Arbiter, supported by SNA Miss Sumar Selon Ki Lamin Khonglah and SNA Khrawkupar Pajat acting as field and technical arbiters, respectively.

Ardhendu Sekhar Mandal of EKHDCA emerged as the champion, followed by Silkam Sangma of GHCA in second place and Silseng N. Marak of SGHDCA in third. Krusen D. Shira from GHCA secured fourth, while Amit Saraf from EKHDCA rounded out the top five. Positions six through ten were occupied by Barbith M. Sangma (GHCA), Balseng N. Marak (SGHDCA), Marcosh N. Marak (GHCA), Bonney Joanes Kharbani (WKHDCA), and Pynmanroi Suting (JHDCA).

In special category awards, Kevinson Jyrwa was named the Best EKHDCA Player, while Gargee Chakravarty earned the Best Female (EKHDCA) award. The best performers from each district included Lallomom Shyrkon (WKHDCA), Dapmon Bang (JHDCA), Khrawbor Makdoh (RBDCA), Diego Derian Marak (SGHDCA), Bensing G. Momin (SWGHDCA), Dibelson Kurbah (EWKHDCA), Banshanbor Marngar (SWKHDCA), and Pringprang Ch. Marak (GHCA).

In terms of age-group and special prizes, Ronyson Shyrkon (WKHDCA) and Amaziah Gapesa Marak (GHCA) were named Best U-17 Boy and Girl, respectively. Nikman G. Momin (GHCA) and Peacyworkd B. Marak (EKHDCA) took home the titles of Best U-13 Boy and Girl. Additionally, Charming R. Marak from SWGHDCA was recognized as the Best Unrated Player, while Dr. Challangga D. Sangma (GHCA) won the Best Veteran award for players over 50.

All prize winners received cash awards, trophies, and certificates, marking the end of a thrilling and well-organized state-level chess event that highlighted the rich chess talent burgeoning across Meghalaya.
