Devastating Flood Alert: Himachal Pradesh and Odisha Face Heavy Rains as IMD Warns of ‘Active Monsoon’ Until July 7!
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several states, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, forecasting significant rainfall on July 1. In a press release dated June 30, the IMD warned of “heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places” likely to occur over Konkan and Goa, the ghats of Madhya Maharashtra, and across Gujarat in the coming week.
Northeast India is also bracing for adverse weather, with the IMD predicting “light to moderate rainfall at most places” accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Isolated instances of heavy rain are expected to persist over the region, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, with significant downpours anticipated on July 2 and 3, and again for Assam and Meghalaya on July 6.
The ongoing heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Odisha has already disrupted normal life, leading to flash floods in several areas on June 30. The IMD noted that active monsoon conditions are likely to continue across many parts of Northwest, Central, and Eastern India for the next six to seven days.
In Odisha, evacuation efforts are underway in low-lying villages of the Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts, which are experiencing flooding due to overflowing rivers, including the Subarnarekha and Budhabalang. As water levels rise, some rivers are exceeding danger marks, prompting urgent action from local authorities.
The weather agency has raised an orange alert for districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla, in response to persistent rainfall. The rest of the state has been placed under a yellow alert following torrential rains that have caused landslides and building collapses. According to reports from PTI, over 600 transformers and 130 water supply schemes have been disrupted due to the heavy rains, causing significant road blockages.
The state’s emergency operation center has reported that rain-related incidents have claimed 23 lives in Himachal Pradesh over the past ten days since the monsoon season began on June 20. In a proactive measure, Uttarakhand Police conducted mock drills statewide to prepare for swift responses to disasters and emergencies during the monsoon.
Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared as severe weather conditions are expected to persist. With ongoing heavy rainfall posing risks of flooding and landslides, citizens are advised to heed warnings and follow safety protocols.
As the monsoon season unfolds, the IMD continues to monitor weather patterns closely, providing updates to keep residents informed and safe in the face of these challenging conditions.
