Manipur’s Commitment: Ending Plastic Pollution Through Collective Action
The month-long observance of World Environment Day 2025, themed “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally,” concluded today at the City Convention Centre, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action against plastic pollution in Manipur. Organized by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, this campaign featured a variety of events and awareness initiatives aimed at raising public awareness about the dangers of plastic waste.
The final day kicked off with a cyclothon starting from THAU Ground and culminating at the convention center, where the formal valedictory ceremony was held. As the Chief Guest, Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, stressed the importance of public compliance for the effectiveness of environmental laws. He remarked, “Despite consistent efforts by authorities to enforce the ban on single-use plastics, meaningful change is impossible without public participation.” Sinha pointed out that much of the improperly disposed plastic contributes to the pollution of Loktak Lake, a critical ecological site in Manipur, asserting the need for swift and ongoing measures to protect this heritage.
T. Brajakumar Singh, Director of Environment and Climate Change, echoed these views, highlighting the significance of engaging youth in addressing plastic pollution through competitions such as symposiums and poster presentations. “The youth must internalize the idea that Earth is as much their home as their individual houses. If we keep our homes clean, why not our planet?” he said, underscoring the necessity of living in harmony with nature.
While acknowledging that a complete ban on plastic use may not be realistic given its widespread presence, Singh emphasized that it is essential and achievable to reduce plastic pollution through mindful consumption, increased adoption of biodegradable alternatives, and behavioral changes. The ceremony wrapped up with prize distributions for student competition winners, symbolizing hope for a cleaner, more environmentally conscious future led by informed and responsible citizens.
