K Bhagyaraj Dies at 73: Legendary Filmmaker Leaves Legacy
Veteran filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj died in Chennai on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 73. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that Bhagyaraj would be accorded full state honours during his final rites, and the funeral is scheduled to be held at Besant Nagar in Chennai.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar led the state in mourning, offering condolences to the family and admirers. The chief minister described Bhagyaraj’s death as “an irreparable loss to Tamil cinema and the cultural life of the State,” while Governor Arlekar said Bhagyaraj’s “remarkable contributions as an actor, writer and film‑maker had enriched Indian cinema and would continue to inspire generations of artists.”
According to reports, Bhagyaraj collapsed at home on Saturday morning and was rushed to a private hospital in Chennai, where doctors were unable to revive him. He had remained active in public life and was last seen a few days earlier attending the wedding celebrations of filmmaker Sundar C and actor Khushbu Sundar’s daughter, Avantika Sundar, in Goa.
Born Krishnasamy Bhagyaraj on January 7, 1953, in Vellankovil near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, he began his film career as an assistant director to Bharathiraja. He later emerged as one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated writer‑directors, known for his work as a storyteller, actor and screenwriter that influenced several generations of filmmakers and audiences.
