Tragic Assault: Student Gang-Raped Inside Kolkata Law College – Justice Demands as Two Staff Arrested
A female law student was reportedly gang-raped at South Calcutta Law College on the evening of June 25, a case that has shocked the local community and reignited concerns about safety in West Bengal. The alleged attackers include a former student and two staff members from the college, who have since been arrested by police.
The incident occurred between 7:30 PM and 8:50 PM, prompting the victim to file a complaint the following day. Local authorities responded swiftly, detaining Manojit Mishra, 31, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20. The two initial arrests took place on Wednesday, with their mobile devices confiscated for further investigation, while Mukhopadhyay was apprehended at his residence on Friday.
Following their arrest, the three men were presented in court at Alipore, where they were remanded to police custody until July 1. According to Noyna Chatterjee, the college’s Vice Principal, Mishra, a former student, was employed temporarily by the institution. Chatterjee emphasized that the college’s governing body was informed as soon as the allegations surfaced and highlighted the need for stringent punishment for those found guilty.
As the case unfolds, political reactions are pouring in. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, asserting that under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal has become increasingly dangerous for women. The party’s spokespersons accused the state machinery of failing to protect its female citizens, labeling the alarming rise in sexual violence as a “daily horror.” They stated, “Enough is enough. BJP will not stay silent. We will fight tooth and nail to end this rape culture that has flourished under TMC’s rule.”
Amit Malviya, a prominent BJP leader, characterized the incident as “horrific” and noted that a TMC member was allegedly tied to the case. He reminded the public of a recent incident involving the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College, underscoring a troubling trend of violence against women in Bengal. Malviya asserted, “Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine tragedy.”
The incident at South Calcutta Law College raises serious questions about the safety of young women in educational institutions and has reignited calls for systemic change. The BJP has pledged support for the victim and her family, vowing to combat a culture of impunity that allows such crimes to flourish.
This recent case echoes previous alarming incidents, particularly the tragic rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College last year, which garnered nationwide attention and outrage. The doctor’s body was discovered in a seminar hall, leading to widespread protests and the subsequent arrest of a suspect who was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
As authorities continue their investigation, the community and political leaders alike are calling for swift justice and reforms to ensure that such atrocities do not happen again. The focus remains on holding those responsible accountable while advocating for a safer environment for women throughout the state.
