Heroic Rescue: Man Clings to Rope as Tawi River Roars Around Him in Dramatic Jammu Video
A dramatic rescue unfolded in Jammu as a video surfaced on social media, capturing the harrowing moment a man, identified as Madan Kumar, clung to a rope in the midst of the Tawi River. The 52-year-old laborer found himself trapped after heavy overnight rain caused the river’s water levels to surge unpredictably. Stranded near the Jewel Chowk bridge, Kumar struggled against the swift current for approximately two hours, desperately waiting for assistance while holding the rope with one hand.
The video, which quickly gained traction online, depicted Kumar glancing anxiously at onlookers on the riverbank, clearly in peril as he battled the raging waters around him. Fortunately, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) sprang into action, conducting a coordinated rescue operation along with local police. SDRF personnel lowered a ladder from the bridge, enabling them to pull Kumar to safety.
Reports indicate that Kumar had been extracting sand from the river at around 8:45 AM when he was caught off-guard by the sudden increase in water levels. His plight was part of a larger rescue operation that day, where a total of nine individuals, including Kumar, were saved from the Tawi River as heavy rains affected various regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
In addition to Kumar, eight others were also rescued, many of whom had ventured out for “Pind Daan” rites. This multi-agency operation saw collaboration between police, traffic officers, the SDRF, and local volunteers, exemplifying the community’s unified response to emergencies.
The meteorological department reported significant rainfall amounts across the area, with Katra town in the Reasi district recording a staggering 108.5 mm. Other regions also saw substantial precipitation, including Rajouri with 80 mm, Udhampur at 71.4 mm, Poonch with 48 mm, and Ramban tallying 47.5 mm over the previous 24 hours. The weather forecast anticipates that light to moderate rain and thundershowers may persist across numerous locations in Jammu division, with heavier bouts expected in some areas through June 27.
The swift rise in water levels sparked concerns, prompting authorities to remain vigilant as they monitored the situation. The bravery of the SDRF and local officials has drawn praise, shedding light on the importance of urgent response measures during extreme weather events. As the community recuperates, the focus remains on safety and preparedness in anticipation of further rain in the coming days.
