Empowered Students of Agricultural College Turn Passion into Profit: Discover Their Inspiring Value-Added Honey Ventures!
Students at Mother Teresa College of Agriculture (MTCA) in Iluppur, Mettusalai, are blending their learning of beekeeping with entrepreneurship through a new initiative focused on value-added honey products. On Tuesday, MTCA Honey Cafe was officially launched, becoming a hub for students to sell honey-infused beverages and wholesome snacks intended to raise nutrition awareness among the campus community. The event was graced by M. Shahreyar, the senior regional manager of Indian Overseas Bank, along with other dignitaries.
The cafe’s menu showcases a variety of innovative snacks, including preserves made with honey mixed with garlic, ginger, dates, raisins, figs, mixed nuts, and even rose petals, known as Gulkand. R. Kavitha, an assistant professor in Agricultural Extension, emphasized that the final-year students participate in an experiential learning module where they apply technology to create products from natural ingredients. This hands-on experience not only includes learning about honey extraction but also encourages students to devise commercial ventures using the honey produced.
“This year’s abundant honey harvest inspired the students to explore entrepreneurial opportunities,” Kavitha noted. The projects arising from this initiative are designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of running a start-up, a key objective of the experiential learning module. Following graduation, students will pass on this knowledge as future cohorts continue to manage the MTCA Honey Cafe and other related projects.
The honey-based preserves, which boast a shelf life of up to 12 months, aim for wider market distribution should initial sales prove successful. R.C. Uthayakumar, chairman of the Mother Teresa Group of Institutions, shared insights during the inauguration, highlighting the significance of such initiatives in enhancing students’ business acumen as well as their connections to agriculture.
This blend of education and entrepreneurship not only enriches the students’ academic experience but also promotes sustainable practices in agriculture by utilizing local resources effectively.
