Former Tripura Chief Minister and BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb sharply criticized the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] on Wednesday, labeling it a “Permanent Emergency” due to its alleged suppression of democratic rights during its 35-year governance in Tripura. His remarks came during the ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ program in Agartala, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Deb accused the CPI(M) of creating an oppressive regime that stripped individuals of their freedoms and civil liberties. He asserted, “Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency for her personal reasons and sullied India’s history. In contrast, the Communists maintained a permanent Emergency in Tripura for 35 years. Nothing could be accomplished without party approval-there was no justice, no freedom.”
Furthermore, he linked the CPI(M) to Maoist ideology, citing a recent statement from the party’s Politburo regarding Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh. “Maoists are their creation. When they die, the Politburo issues statements, and Maya weeps. These individuals have never prioritized public welfare,” Deb said.
Deb did not spare Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, criticizing him by stating, “The grandson of the Prime Minister who undermined the Constitution now flaunts a copy but doesn’t even know how many pages it contains.”
He also condemned both the Congress and CPI(M) for distorting historical narratives and neglecting Tripura’s royal heritage. “During the Communist regime, the history of Tripura’s kings was erased from textbooks. The educational syllabus was politically skewed to keep the populace uninformed,” he claimed.
In closing, Deb emphasized the importance of remembering historical truths, warning, “If we forget our history, our identity will fade. Their objective was to obliterate Tripura’s cultural and historical consciousness.”
