The United States strongly defended its recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during an emergency UN Security Council session on June 22, portraying the action as a necessary measure to safeguard global peace and protect its allies in the region. Acting U.S. Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea delivered an impassioned address, asserting that all other avenues had been exhausted before resorting to military action against key sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

“The time finally came for the United States, in the defense of its ally and in the defense of our own citizens and interests, to act decisively,” Shea declared. She further emphasized Iran’s long history of hostility towards the West, pointing out that calls for the destruction of America and Israel have persisted for over 40 years. “For 40 years, the Iranian government has posed a constant menace to the peace and security of its neighbors, the United States, and the entire world,” Shea stated.

In response, Iranian officials called for the Security Council to condemn what they termed U.S. aggression, characterizing the military strikes as a violation of international law. During the same session, Shea urged Iranian leadership to refrain from escalatory actions and to return to diplomatic negotiations. “Iran should not escalate,” she cautioned, as regional tensions heightened in anticipation of a potential Iranian military response.

Turning the council’s focus to Iran’s broader destabilizing activities in the region, Shea insisted that the body must confront Tehran’s longstanding agenda. “To fulfill its core mission of maintaining international peace and security, this Council must call upon the Iranian regime to end its 47-year effort to eradicate the state of Israel,” she argued. Shea’s demands included a cessation of Iran’s nuclear weapons program and an end to targeting American interests, advocating for negotiations that would benefit both the Iranian populace and its neighboring states.

In response to the strikes, Iran formally requested that the UN Security Council address what it labeled a “blatant and unlawful act of aggression.” Tehran urged the 15-member council to voice strong condemnation against the U.S. military operations. A draft resolution, introduced by Russia, China, and Pakistan, sought an immediate and unconditional ceasefire while denouncing attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities without explicitly naming the U.S. or Israel.

The resolution’s language, however, has sparked considerable debate among diplomats, and member states have until Monday evening to submit their assessments. For the resolution to succeed, it requires at least nine affirmative votes and no vetoes from the five permanent members— the U.S., France, the UK, Russia, or China.

Amidst these developments, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, defended the collaborative U.S.-Israeli military efforts, asserting that neither nation deserves condemnation. “The U.S. and Israel do not deserve any condemnation, but rather an expression of appreciation and gratitude for making the world a safer place,” Danon stated. He added that it was too soon to determine the full impact of the airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear capacity.
