India Struggles in Education: Only 2 Universities in Top 50 Global Rankings!
The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking 2025 has revealed that only two Indian universities have secured a spot among the top 50 educational institutions globally. This ranking highlights the dismal state of India’s education system. While many countries in Asia are making significant progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), India has notably lagged behind. The list includes a total of 2,526 universities across 130 countries.
According to the ranking, merely two Indian universities made it to the top 50, while only four institutions are among the world’s top 100. The highest-ranked Indian institution is Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham from Tamil Nadu, which holds the 41st position globally. The university scored a perfect 100/100 in lifelong learning, student support, and clean water management. In addition, Punjab’s Lovely Professional University (LPU) has entered the top 50 for the first time, ranking at 48th.
Karnataka’s JSS Academy of Higher Education has been ranked 56th, and Himachal Pradesh’s Shoolini University stands at 96th, both making it to the top 100. This year, 135 Indian institutions have been ranked, but India’s representation at the top remains strikingly low. To enhance sustainable development, Indian universities must take more decisive steps in the areas of research, outreach, and management standards.
In contrast, Asia has five institutions listed among the top ten worldwide. Leading this group is Australia’s Western Sydney University, followed by South Korea’s Kyungpook National University in third place. Two other Australian institutions, Griffith University and the University of Tasmania, are ranked fourth, while Indonesia’s Universitas Airlangga holds the ninth position.
