Severe Weather Warning: Heavy Rain Predicted in NE for Next 3 Days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for northeastern states in India, signaling authorities to “be prepared” for significant weather events over the next three days. This warning comes as a new monsoon spell approaches, affecting not only the northeast but also Delhi. According to the IMD’s multi-hazard warning chart, heavy to very heavy rain is expected across the northeastern region, along with isolated instances of intense rainfall later.
K.N. Mohan, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati, confirmed that two branches of the monsoon are emerging-one moving towards Delhi and the other headed for the northeastern states. The IMD has cautioned that in addition to the expected heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Sunday, Monday’s alert will extend to all seven northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh. Although the rainfall intensity is predicted to decrease afterward, Tuesday will still see an orange alert in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, with a subsequent yellow alert for the rest of the northeast on Wednesday.
Recent reports reveal that isolated areas in Assam and Meghalaya experienced heavy rainfall within the past 24 hours. However, while Meghalaya and Tripura recorded typical rainfall amounts, other northeastern states saw either insufficient or drastically low rainfall levels. The IMD has indicated that light to moderate rain frequently accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to persist over the region in the following week.
In May, the northeast has generally received satisfactory rainfall, with amounts varying from normal to significantly above average. Specifically, rainfall recordings show Assam received 334.7 mm, Arunachal Pradesh recorded 303.3 mm, Tripura saw 378.7 mm, and Mizoram logged 289.2 mm-all within the normal range for the month. On the contrary, Nagaland had an excess of 242.4 mm, while Meghalaya and Manipur reported substantial surpluses of 753.1 mm and 296.5 mm, respectively, according to IMD data.
