Restoring Hope: Rotarians Transform Lives of 14 Tribal Families in Kodaikanal

In a significant development for the tribal community in Kodaikanal, 14 families have transitioned from makeshift shelters to secure concrete homes, marking a monumental achievement under the Rotary Model Tribal Village project. For years, Mallika, one of the beneficiaries, lived in a vulnerable structure covered by a plastic sheet and supported by bamboo sticks. However, June 22, 2025, stands out as a transformative day for her, as she received a new home complete with a concrete roof and an attached bathroom, spanning 150 square feet. Each unit costs ₹5 lakh, with the total project budget amounting to ₹70 lakh.

The initiative was sparked by Rajkumar Raman, a local Rotarian, after his visit to the tribal settlement in Valaigiri, approximately 30 kilometers from upper Kodaikanal. Witnessing the dire living conditions of families exposed to harsh elements and wildlife threats, he felt compelled to take action. Initiating the project in June 2022 with a ceremonial ground-breaking event, Rajkumar garnered support from friends and local philanthropists.

His efforts began from a serendipitous conversation with former District Governor Jawaharilal Jain, which illuminated the challenges faced by nomadic tribes. “The living conditions were quite challenging,” Rajkumar explained. “These families lived in inadequately constructed shelters, often sharing their space with livestock and enduring extreme weather conditions, particularly during the winter months.” The urgent need for dignified, safe housing became evident, especially for women, children, and the elderly who had few options for protection from the cold.

Rajkumar’s quest for land for the 14 families was supported by a local landlord, who generously offered two cents of his 30-acre property for the initiative. The efforts culminated with revenue officials finalizing the necessary documentation directly in the names of the beneficiaries, ensuring their ownership.

During a heartfelt ceremony on June 22, Rotary District Governor R. Raja Govindasamy presented the keys to the new homes. He praised Rajkumar’s initiative, describing it as a groundbreaking achievement that could inspire other Rotarians. “This endeavor, an exceptional achievement by an individual, deserves commendation and is likely to motivate others to take similar action,” he remarked.

Lakshminarayanan, MD of Sundaram Home Finance, shared his sentiments, emphasizing that witnessing the original living conditions of these families gave the project immense significance. K.S. Nagaraj Setty from Mumbai, a project contributor, expressed his eagerness to support the children of the beneficiaries in their pursuit of higher education.

Motivational speaker and former SP Kaliamoorthy emphasized the importance of philanthropy during the ceremony, inspiring attendees with his insights. Grateful for the newfound stability and safety, Mallika spoke on behalf of the families, expressing the emotional weight of owning their homes. “This is an unforgettable moment for us,” she said, thanking donors and project leaders for their support.

The Rotary Model Tribal Village project not only transforms living conditions but also empowers families with the dignity of ownership, creating a brighter future for Kodaikanal’s tribal community.
