Tragic Dowry Murder: Newlywed Woman’s Death Staged as Suicide in UP
In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Kotwa village, a 22-year-old newlywed woman named Sapna was found dead in her in-laws’ home, with her body hanging from a ceiling fan. Police suggest that this may have been staged to appear as a suicide. The local police, led by Station House Officer Ratnesh Dubey, responded promptly to the incident, taking Sapna’s body for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Sapna married Narendra Chauhan on March 2, 2025. Her maternal grandfather, Babbu Chauhan, filed a complaint alleging that her in-laws had subjected her to ongoing harassment for additional dowry, despite already receiving a substantial amount at the wedding. According to the complaint, Sapna’s family had transferred Rs 90,000 through bank channels, provided Rs 3 lakh in cash, and given a gold chain and a ring. Nevertheless, her in-laws allegedly continued to demand further financial gifts, including a Bullet motorcycle and an additional Rs 3 lakh.
As Sapna’s family struggled to meet these escalating demands, the circumstances deteriorated. Her grandfather believes that she was murdered, asserting that her death was made to look like suicide by hanging her with a dupatta from a fan hook. In light of this complaint, police have initiated legal proceedings under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act, naming Narendra Chauhan, his sister Champa Devi, and two sisters-in-law, Puja Devi and Reena Devi, as suspects.
The three women have been arrested and placed in judicial custody after due legal processes were followed. Meanwhile, authorities continue to search for Sapna’s husband, Narendra Chauhan, who is currently at large.
