NHIDCL Accelerates Umshyrpi Bridge Completion: Key Structure Ready!
SHILLONG, June 19: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has successfully installed four massive girders for the Umshyrpi bridge in Rilbong, a crucial step that inspires optimism about completing the first package of the Shillong-Dawki Road project by December this year. Officials noted that the installation posed significant challenges due to the hilly terrain and restrictions that prevented work during daylight hours. To overcome these hurdles, the NHIDCL worked tirelessly for 7 to 8 hours each night, despite facing frustrations from local residents unable to use the road after dark. “It was a herculean task, and safety was our topmost priority as we dealt with large cranes, heavy girders, inclement weather, low visibility, and difficult terrain, along with some frustrated people, but we are all relieved now,” stated an official. Following the girder installation, NHIDCL is now focused on casting the bridge slab. In addition, officials reported the successful completion of four minor bridges in the first package, which is designed as a four-lane road. The work on 25 out of 27 culverts has also been finalized. “Currently, we are working on a vehicular underpass in the 101 HQ area,” the official added, mentioning that structural work is 90% complete and the road is beginning to take shape as a four-lane thoroughfare. The project includes two Greenfield bypasses, with one measuring 1.9 km in the 3rd Mile area and another stretching 2.9 km at the 8th Mile. Officials noted that without the prolonged monsoon rains, the entire package could have been completed in a matter of months.
