Urgent: Kochi Corporation Secretary Ordered to Investigate Resto Cafe Concept Implementation for Vibrant Community Revival!
The Kochi Corporation is exploring the exciting possibility of introducing ‘resto cafes’ throughout the city, featuring public toilets on the ground floor and dining establishments on the first floor. This initiative, proposed by Urban Solutions, aims to enhance urban amenities while catering to the needs of the public. Mayor M. Anilkumar has tasked the Corporation’s secretary with a comprehensive review of the project, which is set to be discussed at the upcoming council meeting.
In a strategic approach, Mayor Anilkumar suggested piloting several resto cafes before considering a broader rollout. Urban Solutions unveiled its proposal for 25 resto cafes across Kochi at Wednesday’s council meeting. The design includes separate restroom facilities for women, men, and differently-abled individuals on the ground floor, while the first floor will host food kiosks and restaurants. The concept outlines three categories of cafes: the premium category featuring amenities such as CCTV surveillance, Wi-Fi, sanitary pad incinerators, solar panels, and water conservation systems, along with two other tiers offering more basic facilities.
The initiative requires approximately 75 cents of land, structured under a build-operate-transfer model, which would see the cafes handed over to the Corporation after a 20-year operational period. Urban Solutions plans to invest around ₹270 crore into the project during this time and will need approximately 3,500 sq m. for advertising space.
As part of the proposal, the company seeks to create additional revenue streams by implementing workspaces and water kiosks alongside the cafes. This multifaceted approach aims to generate funds from advertisements as well as from the cafes’ operations, enabling the company to tax the Corporation accordingly.
The political landscape surrounding the proposal has sparked varied reactions. Ruling LDF councillors have expressed concerns regarding ensuring that Urban Solutions does not profit excessively from the venture. Meanwhile, the opposition UDF councillors advocate for a careful evaluation of the project rather than an outright dismissal.
