New FASTag Annual Fee Announced: ₹3,000 Toll Hike by Nitin Gadkari
On Wednesday, Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced a new annual FASTag pass for private vehicles, priced at ₹3,000. This pass will be effective from August 15 and will be valid for one year or up to 200 trips. Gadkari stated in a post that the new pass aims to simplify, enhance convenience, and reduce costs for private vehicle owners traveling on national highways. The pass will soon be available through the “Rajmarg Yatra” mobile app and the official websites of NHAI and the Ministry, allowing users to activate or renew it online.
The primary goal of this new annual pass is to ease traffic issues at toll plazas within a 60-kilometer radius. By implementing a simplified toll payment system, it is expected that waiting times at toll gates will decrease, benefiting millions of travelers. In recent discussions, the government considered two alternative toll policies: an unlimited travel option for ₹3,000 annually and a flat toll fee of ₹50 for every 100 kilometers.
The ₹3,000 annual pass has now been officially approved by the government, leading to the cancellation of the “Life-long FASTag” scheme, which cost ₹30,000 for 15 years. This new system will utilize the existing FASTag technology, though Gadkari mentioned that in the future, a GPS and sensor-based automatic toll collection system without toll booths will be introduced.
