Trailblazing Chennai-Born Engineer Prof. Chandrakasan Named Provost of MIT: A Historic Leap Forward!
Prof. Anantha Chandrakasan has been appointed as the new provost of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), marking a significant milestone as he becomes the first Indian-American to hold this prestigious position. Celebrated for his innovation and leadership within the academic community, Chandrakasan, who hails from Chennai, will officially transition into this role on July 1.
Chandrakasan currently serves as MIT’s chief innovation and strategy officer and the Dean of the School of Engineering. As provost, he will take on a vital role as the institute’s chief academic and budget officer, overseeing faculty matters, educational endeavors, and the strategic planning necessary for MIT’s future initiatives. Expressing his gratitude in a statement, Chandrakasan remarked, “I am deeply honored to take on the role of provost. Looking ahead, I see myself as a key facilitator, enabling faculty, students, postdocs, and staff to continue making extraordinary contributions to the nation and the world.”
MIT President Sally Kornbluth emphasized the importance of Chandrakasan’s appointment during a challenging period for the institution. She acknowledged that the environment surrounding MIT has become increasingly uncertain, particularly regarding federal support for research and the retention of top talent. Kornbluth noted, “In a time of such intense pressure and potentially historic change, I am particularly grateful that we will be able to draw on Anantha’s depth and breadth of experience.”
The Consulate General of India in New York extended congratulations to Chandrakasan, highlighting his advocacy for India-U.S. technological collaboration and his persistent efforts to strengthen the ties between the two countries in research and development.
Chandrakasan’s academic career at MIT is distinguished; he has been the dean since 2017 and served as the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science for six years prior. Kornbluth selected him as MIT’s inaugural chief innovation and strategy officer due to his problem-solving abilities and strategic vision.
In his new position, Chandrakasan has laid out three main priorities: understanding institutional needs and facilitating strategic financial planning, attracting high-caliber talent, and enhancing research and education programs. He intends to engage with academic leaders across various departments to better understand their unique challenges and aspirations. “This will help me refine and set the priorities for the Office of the Provost,” he explained.
To ensure ongoing collaboration and communication, Chandrakasan plans to establish advisory groups that include faculty, students, postdocs, and an external council. He believes that interdisciplinary cooperation is crucial for the future of education. “We need students who can do more than just code or design or build,” he said. “They must understand the human perspective and insights. Collaborations between STEM fields and the humanities, arts, and social sciences, such as through the new MIT Human Insights Collaborative, are so important.”
Chandrakasan holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. His commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration will be instrumental as he steps into this pivotal role at MIT.
