Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary on Monday evening (local time) to participate in the G7 Summit taking place in Kananaskis, Alberta. This marks Modi’s first visit to Canada since 2015, and during his 23-hour stay, he will engage in the G7 Outreach Session on Tuesday. Alongside this, he is expected to hold bilateral meetings, including one with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, before departing for Croatia on Tuesday evening.

Official sources indicate that Modi’s itinerary is being finalized to maximize opportunities for bilateral engagement. Speculation remains regarding the possibility of a formal meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, while discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have not been ruled out.

This year marks India’s 12th participation in the G7, with Modi attending for the sixth time. The consistent invitations since 2019 highlight the importance that the G7, comprised of the world’s most advanced economies, places on India’s emerging status. Indian officials have underscored that India’s economy has surpassed that of at least three G7 members: France, Italy, and Canada.

In 2023, India successfully concluded its G20 presidency, affirming its role as a strong advocate for the Global South. An official stated, “India has always brought the issues of the Global South to the forefront during its interventions at previous G7 summits.” In the last G7 summit held in Apulia in 2024, Modi was part of discussions on critical issues such as artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean, allowing invited countries to share views on global challenges.

As the G7 has evolved from an economic-focused gathering into a broader forum addressing pressing global concerns-ranging from peace and security to climate change-Modi is likely to reiterate India’s stance on terrorism. The Indian government aims to galvanize international support to further isolate Pakistan in the aftermath of recent attacks, including the incident in Pahalgam.

The G7 summit serves as a pivotal platform for dialogue on major global challenges, allowing countries to collaborate and establish common ground. Modi’s participation is anticipated to enhance India’s diplomatic efforts, ensuring that its voice and interests are prominently featured in discussions that shape international policy.

As the world continues to navigate complex issues, Modi’s presence at the G7 is a testament to India’s growing influence and the significance the nation holds in global affairs. With a robust economic position and a commitment to advocating for the Global South, India is poised to play a vital role in future dialogues that address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
