IndiGo Launches Exciting New Jorhat-Delhi Flights Starting Sept 20
IndiGo plans to launch new routes to connect cities in Assam with major hubs across India, as announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He confirmed that the long-standing request for a direct flight from Jorhat to Delhi will commence on September 20, fulfilling a critical demand for air travel in the region. In a post on X, Sarma expressed his optimism, stating, “Good news for Assam’s Air Travellers! Post my discussion with the IndiGo management, the airline will start new routes to connect Assam’s cities with major hubs of the country.”
On Monday, IndiGo detailed its plans to operate direct flights connecting Delhi and Jorhat four times a week starting September 20, 2025. Additionally, daily direct flights will link Delhi with Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, beginning September 16, 2025. These new connections are expected to enhance tourism, facilitate trade, and bolster local economies, thereby reinforcing the region’s connectivity to northeastern India and southern Tamil Nadu.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, stated, “We are pleased to introduce exclusive direct flights from Delhi to Jorhat as well as Tiruchirappalli, reinforcing our commitment to expanding domestic connectivity and enhancing access across the country. These daily flights will strive to provide affordable travel options to explore the rich cultural, spiritual, and natural wonders these regions have to offer.”
Jorhat is recognized for its spiritual and economic significance in northeastern India. Situated near Majuli, the world’s largest river island and a center for Vaishnavite culture, Jorhat plays a vital role in supporting local traditions. The city’s economy is heavily influenced by its tea industry, known for producing some of the finest teas globally, and it also serves as a hub for agriculture and trade. Additionally, its proximity to Kaziranga National Park promotes eco-tourism, which is essential for local livelihoods and conservation efforts.
Earlier, on March 7, IndiGo announced plans to introduce a direct flight service between Tiruchirappalli and Jaffna, commencing March 30, 2025. This route aims to meet the rising demand for travel options for both business and leisure travelers between South India and the historical significance of Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka. The introduction of daily direct flights is set to enhance connectivity and promote economic growth and cultural exchange between these two regions.
Malhotra further expressed his enthusiasm for this expansion, stating, “We are pleased to expand our presence in Sri Lanka with the launch of our exclusive Tiruchirappalli-Jaffna route.” Tiruchirappalli, often referred to as Trichy, is a vibrant city in Tamil Nadu, celebrated for its rich heritage, spiritual importance, and industrial development. With notable landmarks such as the Rockfort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, it attracts both pilgrims and history enthusiasts. As a major educational and industrial center, housing NIT Trichy and a flourishing manufacturing sector, Trichy is positioned as a key gateway to southern India.
