Local Heroes Save Two from Harrowing Situation in Daring Rescue
Two individuals were swept away by strong currents while swimming in the Rohtak River in West Sikkim on the evening of June 14. Fortunately, alert local residents quickly rescued them. The sudden rise in water levels, caused by heavy rainfall, created flash flood-like conditions that caught the swimmers off guard.
This incident occurs amid ongoing severe rain and landslides striking Sikkim. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for North Sikkim and Gangtok, warning residents of possible flooding and landslips in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have confirmed that most rivers in the state are flowing above safe levels. The Sikkim government has advised residents to stay away from rivers and streams, particularly during this period of increased weather activity.
Rainfall resumed across multiple parts of the state on Saturday night, heightening the risk of flash floods and landslides in regions already affected. Emergency services remain vigilant, and locals are urged to exercise caution.
