Researchers at the University of Calicut’s Department of Nanoscience and Technology have made a significant breakthrough in light-emitting diode (LED) technology with the creation of a novel device utilizing gold–copper alloy nanoclusters. E.S. Shibu, an Assistant Professor at the Smart Materials Lab, and his PhD student Rival Jose spearheaded this innovative initiative, which promises to reshape the future of sustainable lighting, display technologies, and biomedical imaging.

The team emphasizes that these nanoclusters, although invisible to the naked eye, exhibit outstanding photophysical properties. Notably, they boast strong light emission, remarkable photo and thermal stability, and compatibility with environmental standards. "What sets our innovation apart is the fabrication method," explains Mr. Shibu. He highlights the simple, solution-based process that is both environmentally friendly and free from toxic or expensive materials, rendering the technology sustainable and cost-effective.

At the heart of their invention are atomically precise nanoclusters composed of just a few metal atoms. The resulting nanocluster-based LED emits a pure red light and achieves an external quantum efficiency of 12.6%. Shibu notes that this performance is among the highest recorded for nanocluster-based, solution-processed, non-doped LEDs with saturated red emission.

Their groundbreaking findings have been published in the prestigious journal Advanced Materials (Wiley), which boasts an impressive impact factor of 27.4. This publication marks the first time research from the University of Calicut has appeared in such a high-impact journal, a testament to the team’s rigorous scientific exploration.

The success of this research was bolstered by both national and international collaborations with esteemed institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Tampere University in Finland, and Hokkaido University in Japan. Financial backing was primarily provided by the Department of Science and Technology’s Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence, alongside additional support from the Science and Engineering Research Board’s Startup Research Grant, the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

As the world increasingly shifts towards sustainable technologies, this advancement in LED technology not only showcases the innovative spirit of researchers but also marks a significant step forward in developing eco-friendly and efficient lighting solutions. With its combination of efficiency, environmental compatibility, and economic viability, this novel nanocluster-based LED could set new standards for future applications across various sectors.

This research could potentially transform not just how we light our homes and offices, but also enhance the capabilities of display technologies and biomedical imaging techniques. With a focus on sustainability and performance, the University of Calicut’s latest achievement underscores the vital role of academic research in addressing global technological challenges.

As we look towards the future of illumination, the collaborative efforts of Shibu, Jose, and their partners exemplify the importance of innovation and cross-disciplinary research in creating a brighter, more sustainable world.
