Heartbreaking Tragedy: Air India Ahmedabad Plane Crash Claims 270 Lives as Families Desperately Await Closure

On June 14, 2025, the tragic toll from the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad climbed to 270, as families voiced their frustration over delays in the release of badly charred bodies of their loved ones. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 242 passengers and crew members when it lost altitude shortly after takeoff, ultimately crashing into buildings below and resulting in what is now regarded as the worst aviation disaster in a decade.

Authorities have confirmed the recovery of at least 270 bodies from the crash site, according to Dhaval Gameti, president of the Junior Doctors Association at B.J. Medical College. Tragically, only one passenger survived, while the aircraft struck a medical college’s hostel during its catastrophic descent. The incident has tarnished Air India’s reputation, exacerbating concerns as the airline attempts to rebuild and revitalize its fleet following its acquisition by the Tata Group in 2022.

In response to the disaster, Tata’s chairman announced on Friday that the group is committed to understanding the sequence of events that led to the crash, adding, “we don’t know right now.” Both Air India and the Indian government are investigating factors contributing to the incident, including engine thrust issues, flaps, and the landing gear remaining open during takeoff.

While doctors work tirelessly at an Ahmedabad hospital to perform DNA profiling on the deceased, families of the victims are left anxiously awaiting updates. Many have gathered outside the facility, desperate to collect the bodies of their loved ones. Rafiq Abdul Hafiz Memon, who lost four relatives in the crash, expressed his distress, stating, “We have lost our children… we are not understanding anything. Please help us get information about our children. Tell us when they are going to release their bodies.”

Another grieving father, whose son Harshad Patel was among the victims, relayed his frustration after being informed that DNA profiling could take up to 72 hours. “The authorities are trying to help, but our patience is running out,” he lamented, capturing the emotional turmoil faced by families grappling with this monumental loss.

Identification efforts are being complicated by the extensive damage inflicted on the bodies, leading authorities to rely on dental records for verification. Jaishankar Pillai, a forensic dentist involved in the identification process, confirmed that they have obtained dental records for 135 charred victims, allowing comparisons with existing dental charts and radiographs.

As the investigation continues, the wider implications for Air India remain uncertain. The company has long been under scrutiny as it works to recover passenger confidence and revamp its brand image. However, the tragedy in Ahmedabad has inevitably set back these efforts, leaving many to question the future of the airline in light of this heartbreaking event.

On this distressing day, the focus is not just on numbers, but on the profound human impact-families are mourning the irreplaceable loss of their loved ones, a reality that transcends statistics and prompts urgent calls for answers.
