The police in Northern Ireland have condemned a violent outbreak in Ballymena that left 15 officers injured and resulted in significant property damage. These boys face charges of attempted oral rape and have denied the allegations, which were reported to have been confirmed through a Romanian interpreter.
Initially, a planned demonstration in Ballymena began around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, gathering a large crowd marching toward Clonavon Terrace, the site of the alleged assault. While the initial procession was deemed “peaceful,” tensions escalated when several masked individuals diverged from the main group. They began erecting barricades, hoarding projectiles, and launching attacks on nearby properties.
The unrest has drawn attention from far-right groups and social media influencers who have amplified information regarding the case, which some have exploited to justify or celebrate the ensuing violence. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson expressed deep concern over the situation, stating, “The shocking scenes of disorder on the streets of Ballymena have to be condemned in the strongest terms.” He urged participants in the riot to reconsider their actions, emphasizing that violence only heightens risk to the community.
In the aftermath, a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of riotous and disorderly behavior, along with additional offenses. The police are also investigating a related incident in the nearby village of Cullybackey, where a Molotov cocktail was reportedly thrown at a residence shortly after midnight on Tuesday. A vehicle was ignited during this attack, damaging a home where a woman and her two children were present, and authorities are treating this incident as another potential hate crime.
