The twelfth Foundation Day of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardev University in Nagaon was celebrated today with a series of events held at the university’s auditorium. The festivities commenced at 10 a.m. with a flag hoisting ceremony led by the university’s Chancellor, Bhuben Deka, who is also an office-bearer of the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha.
Following this, at 11 a.m., a formal meeting was organized at the auditorium, which began with a lighting of lamps. The welcome address was delivered by the university registrar, Dr. Sharad Hazarika, who provided a brief overview of the previous year’s achievements. The Chancellor, Bhuben Deka, reflected on the university’s foundation and discussed how to scientifically instill the teachings of Sankardev in the public consciousness.
Among the distinguished guests was Professor Debobrata Das, the state’s education advisor for higher education, who emphasized the significant intellectual contributions of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardev University towards Assamese national life. He noted that in its short 11-year journey, the university has established a strong identity and urged researchers to advance the invaluable creations of Sankardev.
In his remarks on the Indian higher education system, he emphasized the need for curricula to be career-oriented, stating that “career-oriented” does not just mean jobs; it involves skills. He stressed that only through a blend of career-oriented courses and skills can students thrive.
The eighth edition of the Assamese department’s annual publication, “Dapon,” was also unveiled during the event. Notably, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ashok Kumar Bora from Gauhati University’s Geography department, shared his insights, alongside the District Development Commissioner of Nagaon, Devyani Chowdhury.
Kushal Thakuriyah, the university coordinator and Chief Editor of the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, expressed gratitude for the robust initiatives taken by the state government that led the institution to its twelfth year, reflecting on the journey from its establishment to its current status.
The program was managed by Dr. Jayanta Madhab Tamuli, an assistant professor in the English department, who concluded the event by thanking everyone involved in making the Foundation Day celebration successful. In attendance were notable figures including Dr. Pulin Bora, Principal of Nagaon College, retired Professor Deepak Bora of the Assamese department, Dr. Sangita Bora, and a host of other distinguished guests and faculty members, along with students and staff.
