Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Triumphs: Regaining Control of Abandoned Welfare Scheme Flats for a Brighter Community Future!
The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has initiated a renewed effort to reclaim flats allocated to economically disadvantaged families that have either been rented out to third parties or left unoccupied for extended periods. As part of this initiative, officials from the Corporation’s housing department revealed that they have successfully retaken possession of 15 units so far, reallocating these homes to families identified as landless and homeless under the State government’s program aimed at uplifting the poorest households.
In a recent development, a family of four was relocated from a dilapidated one-room shed in Muttathara to one of the flats recently repossessed by the Corporation. This move underscores the urgency of addressing housing needs in the area. The Corporation began an extensive survey a year ago to determine whether flats provided under various schemes were being occupied by their intended beneficiaries. Alarmingly, they discovered that around 60 flats were either vacant or had been rented out. Many of these units are located in residential complexes constructed over a decade ago under the Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) project at Kalladimukham and another more recent project in Poonkulam.
Officials indicated that a potential reason for the lack of occupancy among some original beneficiaries might be the size of the flats, which are limited to one-bedroom, 320-square-foot apartments. Over the past year, the Corporation has issued three notices to beneficiaries regarding their occupancy status. Consequently, some families have returned to their flats, while others have not, leading to the Corporation’s decision to reclaim the remaining units.
Currently, the Corporation has identified 50 families who are classified as extremely poor and without land or homes. Out of these, 15 families have already been provided with flats that were retaken from previous beneficiaries. The Corporation faces challenges in locating available land in accessible areas for constructing new residential complexes under the LIFE project, which has intensified scrutiny of existing properties allocated to beneficiaries.
The situation highlights the ongoing struggle to address housing shortages in Thiruvananthapuram, alongside the critical responsibilities of the local government in ensuring that essential services are provided to those in need. As the Corporation continues to manage its housing assets, its efforts reveal the complexities of urban housing policies and the urgent demands of its most vulnerable residents.
