Unraveling the Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: Key Players in Raja’s Tragic Death
As the Meghalaya Police intensified their investigation into the shocking murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, they, along with Indore police, released the names and photographs of the five individuals arrested in connection with the case. Raja was reportedly killed by his wife, Sonam, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. His body was discovered in a gorge on June 2, ten days after the couple had gone missing. Sonam reappeared at a roadside eatery in Ghazipur on June 9.
Sonam, who surrendered to authorities, is considered the main suspect in the case. She has been taken into custody along with four others: Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Raj Singh Kushwaha, and Anand Kurmi. Reports indicate that Sonam had allegedly offered ₹20 lakh to hired assassins for her husband’s murder. It has been suggested that she feigned fatigue and walked behind Raja just before giving the order for the attack.
A report from News18 states that Sonam maintains her innocence, claiming she was abducted and asserting that she is a victim, not an accused. Nevertheless, she has been placed in transit remand and is expected to be transferred to Shillong for further questioning.
Raja and Sonam were married on May 11 and began their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20. The search for them commenced after their rented scooter was found abandoned along the road between Shillong and Sohra on May 24. The second suspect, Raj Singh Kushwaha, who is believed to be Sonam’s boyfriend, is alleged to be the mastermind behind the murder and has also been placed under a seven-day transit remand.
The third suspect, 19-year-old Akash Rajput, was arrested in Lalitpur, while the fourth suspect, 22-year-old Vishal Singh Chauhan, was taken into custody in Indore. Police searched Vishal’s home in Indore on Tuesday, recovering clothing he wore while in Shillong. Authorities are currently attempting to locate his mobile phone.
Police officials stated, “We have recovered the clothes he wore in Shillong on the day of the incident. They have admitted to committing the murder. We are now looking for his mobile phone,” as quoted by news agency ANI.
Additionally, Anand Kurmi, the fifth suspect from Bina, was also captured and placed under a seven-day transit remand. Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed on Tuesday that some of the arrested individuals confessed to their involvement in the crime. He noted that all suspects would likely be transported to Shillong, either that night or the next day.
“All accused have been arrested in various locations-one in Madhya Pradesh and another in Uttar Pradesh. Some have confessed to their participation in the crime. We have secured the transit remand, and they will most likely be in Shillong tomorrow,” he stated.
A local tour guide, who informed the police about three men seen with the newlyweds on the day they disappeared, has claimed he recognized one of the suspects from photographs provided by the authorities. Albert Pde, the guide at Mawlakhiat, expressed relief at the developments, stating, “I am happy that the criminals are finally behind bars. We stand vindicated. Those who tried to tarnish the image of Sohra and its residents as violent have now been exposed.”
