Speaking to reporters just before boarding Air Force One for Camp David, Trump claimed that the demonstrators had engaged in physical provocations that warranted a strong federal response. “They spit and worse, you know, what they throw at them, right?” Trump remarked. He added, “When that happens, I have a little statement. They spit, we hit. And I told them, nobody’s going to spit on our police officers, nobody’s going to spit on our military.”
He emphasized the need for a robust approach to law and order, saying, “If we see danger to our country and to our citizens, it will be very, very strong.” After addressing reporters, Trump took to social media to announce further actions against the protests, repeatedly labeling them an “invasion.” He stated, “A once great American city, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by illegal aliens and criminals. Now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our federal agents to try and stop our deportation operations. But these lawless riots only strengthen our resolve.”
Trump outlined his directives, stating he has tasked Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi to take all necessary actions to “liberate Los Angeles from the migrant invasion” and restore order, declaring, “The illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free.”
His remarks came after National Guard troops were deployed to a Los Angeles detention center, where they used tear gas to disperse protesters opposing the latest wave of immigration raids. These protests have continued for two days, drawing significant tensions and condemnation from state leaders. California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the troop deployment, calling it an effort to “manufacture a crisis.” However, the White House maintained that the deployment was legally justified under Title 10, which permits the president to federalize the National Guard during instances of rebellion or threats to federal authority.
While Trump has not yet invoked the US Insurrection Act-a measure that would allow the deployment of active-duty military forces for civil enforcement-he has expressed a willingness to expand his response. “We’re looking at troops everywhere. We’re not going to let this happen to our country,” he stated. When asked about the criteria for potentially deploying Marines instead of National Guardsmen, he replied, “The bar is what I think it is.”
