Tragic Discovery: 9-Year-Old Girl’s Body Found in Suitcase Sparks Outrage and Protests in North-East Delhi
A tragic incident unfolded in northeast Delhi’s Nehru Vihar on Saturday, where a nine-year-old girl was found dead, allegedly after being sexually assaulted and concealed in a suitcase. The police reported the discovery late Saturday evening, spurring a massive manhunt for the perpetrator, who reportedly fled the area following the crime.
Authorities were alerted shortly after the girl was reported missing by her family. During the Id-ul-Azha celebrations, she had been sent to fetch ice from her grandmother’s home nearby. When she did not return for an extended period, her parents began searching for her. Her mother, visibly distressed, recounted their frantic search efforts, which included making announcements at the local mosque.
The girl was later discovered in a nearby flat in an unconscious state. Her father recounted the shocking scene: “I found it unusual for a suitcase to lie on the floor. I immediately opened it and saw my daughter inside.” Despite being rushed to the hospital, medical personnel declared her dead on arrival, noting facial injuries that suggested possible sexual assault.
According to DCP (North East) Ashish Mishra, a case has been registered at the Dayalpur police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, which addresses aggravated penetrative sexual assault. To expedite the investigation, police have established six teams tasked with tracking down the suspect, while forensic teams have begun analyzing the crime scene for evidence.
The incident triggered local protests, with a crowd gathering at the victim’s home on Sunday. Demonstrators expressed their outrage, accusing the police of negligence and demanding swift action to arrest the suspect. “We want capital punishment for the accused,” asserted local resident Imran Khan, emphasizing the community’s demand for justice.
Amidst the rising tensions, a political feud emerged, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) exchanging accusations regarding the incident. AAP’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, pointed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, asserting that accountability lies with the central government. He lamented, “Our daughters are not safe under the BJP government,” highlighting concerns regarding safety under current leadership.
In response, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva rebuked AAP’s allegations, labeling their remarks as “political cunningness” aimed at minimizing the severity of the crime, which should be viewed as a grave societal issue rather than a mere law and order problem.
As investigations continue, police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the neighborhood to maintain order and ensure the safety of residents. The community remains on high alert, demanding justice for the young girl and lobbying for measures to protect children from such horrific acts in the future.
