One of the world’s richest individuals, Mukesh Ambani, has recently made a historic donation of Rs 151 crore to the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), marking the largest contribution in the institution’s history. Ambani, who is the chairman of Reliance Industries-India’s most valuable company-studied at this esteemed institute, previously known as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT). Established in 1933 by the University of Bombay, ICT gained deemed university status in 2008 and subsequently adopted its current name.
Ambani announced the donation during the launch of a book titled “The Divine Scientist,” authored by Anita Patil. The book focuses on the life of Padma Vibhushan Professor Man Mohan Sharma, revered by many students as one of the foremost authorities in Indian chemical engineering. During his speech on the occasion of Guru Dakshina, Ambani expressed his sentiments and confirmed his donation, stating it was made at the urging of Professor Sharma.
“When they tell us something, we just listen. They told me, ‘Mukesh, you have to do something big for ICT’, and I am pleased to announce that it is for Professor Sharma,” Ambani remarked.
In response to a question about his decision not to enroll at IIT-Bombay, Ambani conveyed his deep appreciation for UDCT, describing it as a place akin to a sacred temple. He expressed his admiration for Professor Sharma, stating, “I regard you as my most respected Guru, my guide and source of inspiration.” He fondly recalled his experiences at the institute and commended Patil, emphasizing the challenge of capturing the essence of a great figure like Sharma.
Ambani also highlighted how Sharma’s inaugural lecture had a profound impact on him, solidifying his belief in Sharma’s exceptional capabilities. He characterized Sharma as a transformative leader, someone who could translate curiosity into practical knowledge, subsequently leading to profitable ventures and enduring wisdom. Ambani notably credited the growth of India’s chemical sector to Sharma, who has been honored with the title of “Rashtra Guru” (national teacher).
