A new tragedy has emerged in the wake of 11 fatalities in Bengaluru, with a video from Hassan district in Karnataka going viral, showing a father grieving the loss of his 21-year-old son. The father, B.T. Lakshman, is seen inconsolably weeping in the video, refusing to leave his son’s grave.
The casualties were part of a chaotic incident outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during a fervor-filled event to honor the IPL champions, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Among the approximately 50 injured from the crowd surge was the young man from Hassan. What was meant to be a celebratory occasion turned tragic, claiming the lives of three teenagers and several young men aged between 20 and 35.
The heartbreaking video has sparked outrage on social media, prompting accusations directed at Karnataka’s BJP government. Critics are pointing fingers at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, alleging failures in crowd management.
Following the incident, pressure has mounted on the state government. Four individuals linked to the chaos have been arrested, and five senior police officials, including the Bengaluru police commissioner, have been suspended. In a decisive move, the Karnataka government also dismissed K. Govindaraj, the political secretary to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with a senior officer in the state’s excise department.
