A police complaint has been filed against prominent cricketer Virat Kohli following a deadly stampede that occurred near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during a celebration for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday. The tragic incident led to the loss of 11 lives and numerous injuries.
The complaint was submitted to the Cubbon Park police station by A.M. Venkatesh, representing the Naija Horatagaarara Vedike. Authorities have accepted the complaint and stated that it will be investigated alongside an initial First Information Report (FIR) that was already registered concerning the stampede.
Details regarding the circumstances of the stampede are still emerging. According to the FIR from the Karnataka Police, the RCB franchise, the event management company DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) are named as accused parties for allegedly organizing the victory celebration without the necessary permits.
Charges have been laid under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, and unlawful assembly, among others.
In addition to Kohli’s complaint, two other cases have been filed regarding the incident. One of these complaints was made by Roland Gomes, an individual injured in the stampede who received hospital treatment. His case also targets the RCB franchise, KSCA, and DNA, citing grievances under Section 125(a) of the same legal code.
In his statement, Gomes described how he attended the celebration after seeing a social media announcement about a procession with an open bus. He recounted that upon entering through Gate 17, a sudden rush caused his shoulder to dislocate.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) visited the Cubbon Park Police Station to demand an FIR against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar for their alleged oversight in the event organization.
BJP MLC N. Ravi Kumar, addressing the media after lodging their complaint, insisted that both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister must take accountability for the chaos and loss of life experienced during the RCB celebration. He challenged their moral integrity, stating, “If they have any morality, respect for the constitution, and democracy, they should resign.”
Ravi Kumar also criticized the treatment of police personnel as scapegoats, asserting that officers, including the suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, had previously advised postponing the event, a suggestion that was ignored by the organizers.
He further accused the government officials of being responsible for the stampede, which resulted in both chaos and fatalities, including 50 to 60 individuals being hospitalized.
The BJP state General Secretary P. Rajeev criticized the decision to proceed with the event despite the police department’s warnings about security difficulties, labeling it an abuse of power. He questioned the use of public funds for the victory celebration despite forewarnings from the intelligence department about a substantial turnout.
Various leaders from the BJP, including Ashwathnarayan, S. Dattatri, and others, were present during the delegation’s visit to the police station.
