Desperate Situation in Tinsukia: Floods Cut Off Access to Katha Kakhoroni Village

Katha Kakhoroni, a remote riverside village in the Jagun area of Tinsukia district, has been cut off from the mainland after heavy flooding caused the only connecting road to be washed away by the Dehing River. The recent floods have stranded the 62 families living in the village, leaving them without communication, power, and facing threats from wild elephants. Nearly three-fourths of the vital road has been destroyed, leading to a complete breakdown in access to essential services. With several electricity poles swept away, the entire community is now plunged into darkness.

The situation has drastically affected daily life in the village. Students can no longer reach their schools, patients are unable to access medical facilities, and residents cannot visit markets for necessary supplies. Routine activities have become major challenges for this rural community. Pratibha Kachari, a resident, expressed their despair: “We are completely helpless now. The road was our lifeline — students used it to go to school, patients needed it to reach hospitals, and farmers relied on it to take their produce to the market. Without it, we feel abandoned, as if we are living on an island.”

The lack of electricity has further aggravated their plight. “We have been living without power for days. The river took away the poles, and now we are left in the dark. Our children can’t study at night. Our livelihoods, our children’s education, and our health are all at stake,” Kachari lamented. Locals have also reported frequent raids by wild elephants, which have been destroying their crops and homes. The absence of adequate fencing has exacerbated the situation, leaving farmers vulnerable. Biren Hazarika, a local farmer, stated, “The elephants come almost every night. Our fields are ruined, and we have no way to stop them. If the road was intact, officials could visit and assess the situation. Now, we feel abandoned.”

With urgency, residents have appealed to Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma for immediate intervention to restore the damaged road infrastructure. “We need immediate help. The road must be rebuilt, and temporary measures should be taken to restore electricity. If no action is taken soon, our situation will become even more desperate,” one resident urged.
