Urgent Alert: Over 100 Daily Flights Affected at Delhi Airport-Massive Runway Upgrades Start June 15!

Travellers flying through Delhi in the coming months should expect notable disruptions, as Indira Gandhi International Airport prepares to cancel approximately 7.5% of its daily flights. From June 15 to September 15, the airport will suspend 114 flights each day to facilitate crucial upgrades on runway RW 10/28. This closure aims to enhance the instrument landing system (ILS), making it CAT III compliant, which is vital for ensuring safety during low-visibility conditions, particularly during Delhi’s fog-laden winter months.

Currently, the airport manages around 1,450 flight movements daily, solidifying its position as India’s busiest aerial hub. It features four runways and two operational terminals, T1 and T3, while T2 remains offline for maintenance. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), emphasized the importance of these upgrades. “We want to upgrade that runway to mitigate any issues or problems that we were facing, especially during the fog season,” he noted during a recent press briefing.

The operational schedule includes cancelling 114 flights and rescheduling 86 others to non-peak hours to minimize passenger inconvenience. In total, around 200 flights will be affected daily throughout the three-month upgrade process. DIAL has confirmed that the installation of the ILS is expected to be completed by November 27, just in time to tackle the winter fog.

The initial plan had been to close RW 10/28 earlier, in April and May, but this was abandoned due to heavy congestion and adverse weather conditions. The updated timeline now aligns with directives from the civil aviation ministry and was collaboratively finalized with input from airlines to ensure smooth transitions.

DIAL, predominantly controlled by GMR Airports, highlighted that all slot adjustments were coordinated closely with the airlines to minimize disruptions. Jaipuriar explained, “If you look at it from the right perspective, we have got 1,450 operations in a day. Out of that, about 114 operations are going to be impacted, which is 7.5%.” The supportive presence of various airline representatives at the briefing underscored a consensus on the necessary developments.

“Efforts have been made to ensure a balanced approach to maintain operational stability and minimize disruptions during the closure of RW 10/28,” added Jaipuriar. As the airport moves forward with these enhancements, passengers are encouraged to stay informed and plan their travels accordingly.

With these essential improvements in place, the airport aims to provide a safer and more efficient service for all passengers, especially during challenging weather conditions in the months ahead. As the upgrade date approaches, it remains imperative for travellers to check their flight status regularly, ensuring a smoother travel experience during this transitional period.
