Is the BJP-TIPRA Motha Alliance Falling Apart in Tripura?
Agartala: The relationship between the ruling partners in Tripura’s government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and TIPRA Motha, has become increasingly strained. TIPRA Motha leaders feel that the government is not addressing their concerns seriously and that their demands remain unmet. Since joining the ruling coalition and securing two ministerial positions last year, TIPRA Motha representatives have raised various issues with the government. Despite prolonged negotiations, the Ministry of Home Affairs has yet to make progress on TIPRA Motha’s central demand for Greater Tipraland, along with related socio-economic and cultural matters.
Tensions have also arisen over the choice of scripts for Kokborok, the dialect spoken by the tribal population. While TIPRA Motha and other tribal groups advocate for the adoption of the Roman script, the BJP supports the use of either Bengali or Devanagari scripts. TIPRA Motha representatives have highlighted their pursuit of direct funding from the central government and greater empowerment, claiming this was a reason for their alliance with the BJP, although they report that these goals have not yet been achieved.
Recently, TIPRA Motha organized protests demanding action against district magistrate TK Chakma from Gomati district for alleged misconduct towards the Chief Executive Member of the Autonomous District Council, Purna Chandra Jamatia, as well as against Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman. The party staged a protest by locking down administrative offices last Monday and issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government to take appropriate action against Chakma. On Thursday, Chief Minister Manik Saha issued a warning to unnamed opponents who he claimed were attempting to undermine the reputation of his government.
