Greater Chennai Corporation Unveils Bold Online System to Swiftly Resolve Frustrating Road-Cut Issues!

Civic work continues to lag on Nookampalayam Road in Semmanchery, despite ongoing complaints from residents. N. Murli, a local resident of Thirumoorthy Nagar in Nungambakkam, expressed frustration over the deteriorating condition of the road. He noted that while the installation of drinking water and sewage lines has been in progress for several months, the work has been inconsistent and slowed even before the onset of intermittent rains.

Similar grievances are emerging from various areas, including Nallaiah Naidu Street in Nammalwarpet, Arcot Road in Valasaravakkam, and Moovrasanpet. Amid rising concerns about delayed road repairs and inadequate service connections, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is looking to establish a new online system aimed at improving coordination between different government agencies.

In a recent meeting held on June 3, 2025, GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran directed officials to prioritize the repair of road cuts, stressing the need for expedited action. This decision follows multiple road and pipeline-related issues raised at a council meeting on May 29. During that meeting, Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar emphasized the importance of regular coordination sessions involving Chennai Corporation, Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB), along with engineers from each ward and zone. These sessions aim to address persistent complaints about repeated road cuts throughout the city.

“Road cuts are unavoidable due to extensive and ongoing works carried out by departments like CMWSSB, CMRL, and TANGEDCO. To expedite permissions and streamline the process, we plan to implement an online system for addressing and repairing road cuts,” an official stated.

Meanwhile, S. Jeevan, a councillor from Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), raised concerns regarding the lack of metro water connections in Lebanonpuram. Despite the water supply being cut off 15 years ago to accommodate the construction of the Moolakadai flyover, residents have continued paying for water services. “They rely on two kudams (storage pots), filled from pumps every alternate day. With no option for borewell installation, many are forced to buy water,” he noted, urging the Corporation to address this issue as well.

A zonal official from the GCC confirmed that the CMWSSB would be informed about the ongoing water supply challenges faced by Lebanonpuram residents.

As these civic issues come to light, it becomes increasingly clear that a comprehensive, coordinated approach is essential for improving infrastructure and ensuring essential services for Chennai’s residents. The online system outlined by the GCC could pave the way for quicker response times and more efficient project execution. However, until tangible improvements are made, residents will continue to wait for solutions to their pressing infrastructure problems.
