Manipur Families Urgently Need Support to Rebuild Flood-Damaged Homes
Even as floodwaters recede in Manipur, many affected families remain in relief camps across the region. Numerous individuals, whose homes have been either partially or completely destroyed, are calling on the government for prompt and sufficient assistance to help them restore their normal lives.
Residential areas in Imphal East district were severely impacted by flooding just before the monsoon season began. This disaster was triggered by the breaching of the Imphal River and the overflow of the Kongba River, with localities like Wangkhei, Heingang, Heikrumakhong, Checkon, and Palace Compound experiencing the most devastation.
Official reports indicate that over 165,787 people have been affected, with one casualty and damage reported to 35,342 houses. Currently, most displaced families are residing in more than 70 relief camps.
During the height of the crisis, over 4,000 individuals were rescued by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Manipur Fire Service, the Indian Army, local volunteers, and members of Arambai Tengol.
Although waters have receded, the emotional and material losses continue to burden the victims. Many have cautiously returned to their damaged homes in hopes of salvaging whatever possessions remain.
Families are left in a state of despair, anxiously awaiting government relief and compensation to aid in rebuilding their lives. Konjengbam Ibemcha, a resident of Heikrumakhong, spoke of her experience of losing her home. “My house is on the bank of the Imphal River. When the river breached on May 31, our entire village was submerged. Some homes were swept away, and others were damaged. All need reconstruction,” she shared.
Ibemcha expressed the daily struggle of living in poverty. “I work at a private school. All my hard-earned savings and property were destroyed in hours. One of my children has a disability, and life in a relief camp is incredibly challenging. This disaster has turned our lives upside down,” she said, tears in her eyes.
Though she expressed gratitude to those who lent a helping hand during the crisis, she appealed to the government for support in rebuilding her community.
Khaidem Bembem, another flood victim from Maiba Khun Maning Leikai in Imphal East, echoed similar challenges. “Our village was also flooded last year. We stayed in this same relief camp then. The government promised Rs 10,000 in relief for each affected family, but I have yet to receive it. Now, we are facing another flood without having received anything for the previous one,” she lamented.
Bembem’s family is struggling financially. Her husband is a daily wage laborer, and she cares for four children, one of whom is a three-year-old heart patient. With growing desperation, she awaits help from authorities.
Conflict-ridden Manipur continues to face frequent natural disasters. The recent flooding has once again underscored the vulnerability of its residents, the extensive damage to property and farmland, and the urgent need for effective relief and rehabilitation initiatives.
