A festive gathering to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) successful IPL campaign turned tragic on Wednesday evening when a stampede-like situation erupted outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, leading to multiple fatalities and numerous injuries.
Thousands of eager fans gathered around the stadium, waving RCB’s iconic red flags in anticipation of welcoming their team. The event, organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), came after the state government decided against hosting an open-bus parade due to concerns about traffic congestion and security.
What began as a joyful celebration quickly descended into chaos when the stadium gates reportedly failed to open on time. This caused a frantic rush among the waiting crowd, resulting in overwhelming scenes at the entrance, where panic ensued. Disturbing videos circulated online depicted fans climbing over fences and others collapsing on the ground in distress.
Emergency response teams arrived swiftly at the scene to initiate rescue efforts. Several injured individuals were transported to Bowring Hospital and Vydehi Superspeciality Hospital on Vittal Mallya Road, with some reported to be in critical condition. The emergency wards at these hospitals experienced heavy influxes of patients as ambulances continued to deliver victims throughout the night.
Visuals captured during the incident included a police officer carrying an unconscious spectator to an ambulance, starkly highlighting the harrowing reality of the situation.
Authorities have not yet released an official casualty count or a formal statement. However, criticism has intensified regarding the apparent failures in crowd control and event management. Concerns are being raised about the planning and execution of the event, particularly with regard to entry procedures and the insufficient number of crowd management personnel.
Rescue and medical operations are ongoing, and police are expected to conduct an investigation into the incident.
