Revitalizing Coimbatore: Empowering Urban Health with Innovative New Buildings for Space-Strapped Primary Care Centers

In Coimbatore, the primary health centre at K.K. Pudur is struggling to accommodate the high volume of patients, averaging over 150 daily, within its limited facilities. The existing infrastructure has become a barrier to effective healthcare delivery, with staff reporting cramped conditions that hinder patient care. A nurse at the centre explained, “The ground floor, which includes maternity care, a pharmacy, and consultation rooms, does not have sufficient seating for patients, forcing many to wait on the first floor or outside.” This lack of space is particularly challenging for elderly patients and caregivers who need to navigate stairs to access essential services.

The situation is mirrored at the Seeranaickenpalayam UPHC, where patients often wait outdoors due to insufficient indoor seating and shelter. A visitor highlighted the plight of vulnerable groups, stating, “There is barely any space inside. The elderly and mothers with children struggle the most. Upgrading these facilities is much needed.”

In response to these urgent needs, the Coimbatore Corporation has proposed the construction of new buildings to alleviate the overcrowding at various urban primary health centres (UPHCs). City Health Officer A. Mohan confirmed that a proposal has been submitted to build new structures at ten UPHCs identified as space-constrained. Among those targeted for new facilities are K.K. Pudur, Seeranaickenpalayam, Nanjundapuram, and Sowripalayam, which is particularly burdened by its aging premises.

The K.K. Pudur centre, currently occupying around 900 square feet, faces significant congestion. Mohan noted, “We have identified suitable land and submitted a proposal to the National Health Mission for funding. Once approved, construction will commence immediately.” He added that work is already underway at five other centres that received financial backing in earlier years.

In addition to new constructions, the Corporation plans extensive repair and renovation works at 32 UPHCs, alongside enhancements at 11 Health and Wellness Centres and 16 sub-centres across Coimbatore.

With the expected renovations and new infrastructure upgrades, there is cautious optimism that these initiatives will not only ease overcrowding but also improve the overall quality of healthcare available in the city. As the pandemic underscored the importance of accessible healthcare, such steps towards modernization are increasingly vital for community health.

This revitalization effort marks a significant commitment to public health in Coimbatore, aiming to provide a better experience for patients and healthcare providers alike.
