Meghalaya Police Capture Two Escapees in Assam After Months of Evasion
Guwahati: After more than six months on the run, two individuals who escaped from Nongpoh Civil Hospital in Meghalaya last November have been captured in a joint operation by the Ri-Bhoi and North Garo Hills Police. Both men had been living under false identities in the Goalpara district of Assam.
The Ri-Bhoi Police, with support from their North Garo Hills counterparts, arrested Sunil Das, 29, on May 29, 2025. Das, a resident of Dudhnoi in Assam, was serving a life sentence under the POCSO Act when he escaped on November 15, 2024. He was imprisoned in connection with the Nongpoh Women PS Case No. 07(12)2018. This was Das’s second conviction; he had previously completed a sentence for a different case in Nongpoh.
The second escapee, Pappu Chettri, also known as Robert Chettri, 32, was apprehended on June 3, 2025. Chettri, who lived in Mawsyntai Village, was an Under Trial Prisoner facing charges in Nongpoh Women PS Case No. 59(10)2019, which included serious offenses under the Indian Penal Code. Similar to Das, Chettri escaped from Nongpoh Civil Hospital on the same day.
According to police reports, both men had been evading authorities by using fake identities in Goalpara since their escape. Sunil Das has already been returned to jail, while Pappu Chettri is expected to be presented in Nongpoh court on June 4. Following this appearance, he is likely to be remanded to judicial custody.
